ILLAWARRA gymnasts claimed a batch of medals at the recent NSW Country Gymnastics Championships.

Gymnasts from the Illawarra Gymnastic Sporting Complex won nine medals, including two golds, at the prestigious championships held at Port Macquarie.

Seven-year-old Shauna Mulligan and Ruby De Souza, 15, were the club's gold medal winners.

Shauna finished first in the bars, while Ruby won the beam event and placed second in the bars.

Other club gymnasts to do well included 19-year-old Diana Ucles, who claimed a silver in the vault and beam, as well as a bronze in the floor exercise.

Georgina Parker, 11, also performed well, winning a silver on the floor, while 15-year-old Amanda Robinson finished third on the floor.

Illawarra Gymnastic Sporting Complex manager/coach Sally Wallace applauded the club's performance at the ``last major competition" of the year.

``Any medal at the championship would have been great, to actually win nine is fantastic," Mrs Wallace said.

``They performed exceptionally well and it just goes to show that our gymnasts are enjoying themselves in training and competition.

``It's important on our part, as coaches, to ensure that the girls are not bored, but are continually learning and enjoying their gymnastics."
